You have to enjoy the suffering says 2016 US Open Champion Stan Wawrinka!

Dear Readers,

Stan the Man is the new US Open champion.!!  Already having Australian and French Open in his trophy collection, US Open is the third Grand Slam for him. I do hope that Stan will be able to complete the Career Grand Slam soon.

In the final he beat world’s top ranked player Novak Djokovic in 4 sets. Djokovic took the first set and it looked like it is going to be one sided match. But Stan is very dangerous player. I feel rising to the occasion is Stan’s specialty now. So he fought against odds and ultimately he is our champion. J

The journey to the final was not that very easy for him. In the third round he was down with match point against Daniel Evans. During semifinal – it was raining and newly made stadium roof was being closed which might have made Stan lose his focus. In the final, during fourth set when Djokovic took medical time out twice, Stan had his own problems and he was suffering quietly. After facing all these obstacles victory seems so special in the end.

My dear readers, I would like to share what Stan said after winning Champions Trophy.

You have to accept to suffer and you have almost to enjoy to suffer. Because I think this Grand Slam was the most painful, physically and mentally Grand Slam that I ever player. As I said, I was feeling tired already at the beginning of the match. I was feeling the cramp coming in the third set. In the fourth set I had some pain but most important was what was clear with Magnus (his coach) before was not to show anything. Not to show anything. Give everything and keep fighting and go try to win it.

I remember, when he was the winner of Wimbledon for the very first time 3 years back, it was so much of pressure but this time I am sure he must have enjoyed a lot better.

My favorite Serena Williams has won the 7th Wimbledon title and record 22nd Grand slam of her career. Thus she has matched Steffi Graf’s record of highest grand slam title wins. Serena and her sister Venus are the Wimbledon doubles winners as well. I doubt how many players are there who are so good and dominating in singles and doubles events? Serena is a true champion and a real fighter.

I am sure Milos Raonic and Angelique Kerber will come up with more solid plans to take it one step further in near future.

Congratulations to one and all.

Andy you are awesome!!!

– Leander Paes

As It happened

He won the Bronze medal match in a tough three setter by 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Playing his worst tennis, he pulled off his best win.

Life Of The Champion

Leander Paes was born in a family of Athletics. His Mother captained India in Basketball, and Father won a Bronze medal in hockey in 1972 Olympics. Since childhood Leander wanted to emulate his parents. He achieved this by wining an individual Olympic medal for India.

Leander has won 18 Grand slam titles in Tennis. He is the elite player who has won all grand slam titles both in mixed and men’s doubles event. But still His Olympic win is close to his heart. Playing for the country has always been his number one priority. He played it like a lion as his name depicts  Leander  – ‘a lions-heart.’

After going through a life threatening brain surgery; Leander never looked back. In fact it turned out to be a blessing. His fans and well wishers enjoy watching him play and always wish him to be top on his game. He is a real craftsman deeply passionate about his work.

First time French win for Nole and Garbine Muguruza at Roland Garros 2016!

I started watching and loving tennis just because of the French open tournament. This is my favorite among all the grand slams. I really don’t why but I just love it. Watching all these clay court matches gives me immense joy!

Today, I just want go back and remember all those great players like Gullermo Coria, Justin Henin, Kim Clijsters, David Nalbandian, Carlos Moya and many more to whom watching I had a great time. I do hope I will keep on having such great time for a long time to come.

Okay, let us come back to present now.

Year 2016, French Open crown goes to two first timers. Yes Novak Djokovic and Garbine Muguruza have won the men’s and women’s respective grand slams for the very first time.

Thus Novak Djokovic has completed career grand slam. This one took a little more time for him to win but yes he did it.

I am disappointed with Andy Murray but in a way it’s good that now he has all runner up trophies. I do hope he will do better than this in near future.

There is great news for Indian Tennis lovers as well. Yes, yes Leander Paes and his incredible partner Martina Hingis both of them have completed the career grand slam in mixed doubles. Huge achievement!!!

So let’s see what they have said on the winning point:

“I don’t even remember what happened. It was really one of those things… moments where you just try to be there. It’s like my spirit has left my body and I was just observing my body, going left to right and hoping that Andy will make a mistake, which happened. And, yeah, a thrilling moment. One of the most beautiful I have had in my career.”
– Novak Djokovic

“I was like ‘Did I win Roland Garros? What happened?’ When he said ‘game, set, and match’, I was like, ‘No way! I won?’ It was, like, amazing. I didn’t know what to do, honestly. To jump? To go to the floor? At the moment, I’m like heart attack almost!”

– Garbine Muguruza

“She’s a greater champion off the court than she even is on the court. She handles adversity amazingly with a lot of grace. She handles tough situations very easily. When we get on the court, she’s one of the world’s best communicators, and that’s why I love playing with her.”

– Leander Paes, on winning the mixed doubles with Martina Hingis

Australian Open 2016 – concludes

Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber are the Australian Open 2016 Champions. It was Novak’s 6th Championship title while the very first Australian as well as a Grand slam for Angelique Kerber. The way Angelique Kerber played shows what a great champion she is. It is hard to believe that in the first round she saved a match point and later stages became even better and went on winning the trophy. She also became the first German player after Steffi Graff to win the Grand slam after a long time.

The runner ups Andy Murray and Serena Williams played great matches throughout the tournament but felt one short in the final. It was quite emotional speech by Andy at the presentation ceremony. I hope everything will turn out good for him. The way Serena Williams congratulated and appreciated her opponent; it shows what a great person she is. I do hope the 22nd title is around the corner for Serena. I really liked the way she praised for Angelique Kerber. Here it is:

“Ange congratulations! You did so well. You truly deserved it. You played the best in the tournament. Let me be the first person to congratulate you. I am so happy for you. I hope you enjoy the moment.“

– Serena Williams

As far as Indians are concerned the top ranked pair of Sania Mirza and Swiss Miss. Martina Hingis won the title. This is their 3rd Grand slam title. I am sure there will be many more to come. Sania had a great run with the mixed doubles event as well but unfortunately lost in the tough semifinal match with the ultimate winners Bruno Soares and Elena Vesnina. Leander Paes with Martina Hingis went up to quarterfinal of the Australian Open mixed event. Yuki Bhambri lost to Tomas Berdych in the men’s singles first round.

The winners are

  1. Novak Djokovic
  2. Angelique Kerber
  3. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis
  4. Bruno Soares and Elena Vesnina – Mixed Doubles Champions
  5. Bruno Soares and Jamie Murray and  – Men’s Doubles Champions

Thus concludes the Australian Open Tennis Championship 2016. I had lot of fun listening to live matches on AO radio.

Hello Everyone!

All the best to Andy Murray!! I hope he does able to cross the last hurdle if he makes to the final. He has been playing the part of runner up man way too much. Good luck to recent Chennai Open winner “Stan the Man!” All the best to Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohon Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri from the Indian side.

Well… As of now the first round matches are concluded and Rafa couldn’t make it to the second round. That is sad. I hope he is physically 100% fit. He will bounce back soon.
